Derby Girl … a lazy poem …
14
A couple weeks ago, I went to a Toronto Roller Derby game. I went alone so that I wouldn’t feel any pressure from anybody to sit anywhere I didn’t want to, or leave early, or behave a certain way. I wanted to be able to absorb the experience 100% for myself. After doing so, I’m now ready to share it with everybody.
And seriously … I need to share it with everybody because YOU need to see this sport in action.
I fell in love with a derby girl who called herself Audrey Hellbourne. I didn’t get to meet her. Sigh.
On my drive home from the game, to keep myself awake, I wrote this silly poem, inspired by Miss Audrey Hellbourne. Please don’t take it seriously. :)
Derby Girl
A lazy poem by francy
Hey derby girl, so murky and quiet
Strap on some skates and let’s start a riot
After your game, I’ll show you my tattoos
I’ll bet I don’t have as many as you do
Hey derby girl, I can’t take my eyes off
The roller rink that you’re skating across
I really hope you are over nineteen
Cause I want to ask you about dating
All the blood sweat and tears up in your face
Tell me that you are in love with this game
I’m falling for your bruises and your scars
Hey derby girl, you have stolen my heart!
Hey derby girl, I’m no good with ladies
Neither am I talented at skating
Lend me your knee pads, I will hold your hand
And you can bare with me for a few laps
Hey derby girl, I thought you were single
Can’t blame a guy for trying to mingle
You are a nice girl and all that entails
But your boyfriend, he looks like a female
Hey derby girl I’ve a proposition
It involves a violent competition
We’ll have a race and if I’m the winner
You’ll accept my invitation to dinner
All the blood sweat and tears up in your face
Tell me that are in love with this game
I’m falling for your bruises and your scars
Hey derby girl, you have stolen my heart!
Hey derby girl, you put up a good fight
But I will pick you up later tonight
Wear your hair up, I’ll rent me a nice car
Hey derby girl, you have stolen my heart
Hey derby girl, you have stolen my heart!

I plan to write a sequel on my long drive to Nashville tomorrow. Do you have any tricks or tips for staying awake while driving? Send them my way!
