(Not So) Big Idea Friday #2

The Princess and the Frog releases today.  Disney’s first animated musical in years.  The reviews are excellent and I couldn’t be happier to see the animation of Disney reclaim its throne (albeit under the command of Pixar).

I don’t have anything against all these fantastic animated flicks lately but what happened to quality live-action family adventure films?   Especially those from the late 1980’s and 1990’s?  Home Alone.  Homeward Bound.  Matilda.  Hocus Pocus.  George of the Jungle.  Neverending Story.  Free Willy.  Hook….

Suburban Commando?!?

If you want a live action family movie these days you have to settle for crap like SpyKids or Race to Witch Mountain.

I was thinking about this the other day and wondered what it would be like if Hollywood remade Honey, I Shrunk the Kids.  Rick Moranis would have to sign on before I’d ever go see it, but I think there’s potential in that idea.  As silly as the premise is, it’s also genius.  Turn a boring, everyday backyard into an endless jungle of adventure, laughs and unresolved sexual tension for a small group of teenagers!

I still remember the heart-pounding bumblebee flight scene, the nightmare inducing run-away-from-giant-ants scene and that weird but terrifying scene where Rick Moranis almost eats his own kid with the Cheerios.  How much more engrossing would those sequences be with actual capable special effects?

Speaking of Rick Moranis, there have been heavy rumours of a new Ghostbusters.  So, I suppose somebody in Hollywood is one step ahead of me.

Am I messing with a good thing?  What was your favourite 90’s movie?  Is there one you think would be a good remake?

Let me have it!

Favorite 90′s movie is That Thing You Do, but I don’t think they should do a remake.
