BIOGRAPHY FOR CHAIRMEN OF THE BORED – BY TONGUETWISTED INK!
Compelling history, passionate dedication and self-proclaimed super-unique rock sound: Introducing Manchester’s hardest working band, Chairmen of the Bored. Don’t let their name fool you – these rockers have an exciting story that will leave you wanting more and more.
It all started in the summer of 2002: Vocalist/Guitarist Ben Gerrard had been playing and writing music alone for years, and had always dreamed of forming a band of his own. Enter lifelong friend James Robinson on bass, and family acquaintance Owen Beard on drums. Ben’s ability as a guitarist astounded them, and Chairmen of the Bored was formed and ready to take the UK by storm. Their brand of rock music may bring to mind bands like All-American Rejects, The Ataris and Alkaline Trio, but this humble British trio maintains a strong sense of identity. The band says this of their sound: “Our music is along the lines of pop/punk or emo but it doesnt really fit into any of the genres. The music has just developed over the years and we have ended up with a style that isnt like anyone elses. That’s why, I believe, we stand out from the pack.” With Chairmen’s focus on melodic writing, an effective less-is-more approach to the music, and that unmistakable British flair, it’s no wonder they’ve been making quite a name for themselves.
The road hasn’t always been easy for these ambitious rockers though. In the early years, lead singer Ben was also appaearing in the national UK soap Hollyoaks. Though his role on the show gained the band valuable exposure, his acting contract also prevented Chairmen of the Bored from signing two different but equally promising record deals. “We finally realized that we would just have to be patient and wait until Ben’s contract was up in early 2006,” explains the band’s manager. Finally a free man, Ben, along with James and Owen, has positioned Chairmen of the Bored to do some damage.
A self-promoted tour in May 2006 saw the band supporting headliners like Ocean Colour Scene, Fenix Tx and Zebrahead to name a few. Competing against 2000 other acts, Chairmen won a spot on Channel 4′s Popworld, which attracted management, booking and public relations agencies to work alongside the band. These relationships produced appearances in teen publications such as Bliss, Sugar and Sneak Magazines, as well as radio and net-radio play across the UK and much more. Chairmen of the Bored prides themselves in being one of the few unsigned UK bands to headline their own tours in that area. Considering also, that from May 2006 to the end of the same year, the band will have played 150+ shows, we are looking at one well-oiled machine.
“At one gig in Middlesbrough, when we came off the stage, we all went into the crowd with our CDs,” the band explains. “In less than a minute, we had sold every single copy! We were nearly crushed by the crowd!” With stories like this, it’s crystal clear that Chairmen of the Bored is doing everything right. Fueled by perseverance and dedication – Chairmen of the Bored is definately a success story in the making.
